Evangelical Covenant Church of Wausa

THE EVANGELICAL COVENANT CHURCH OF WAUSA, NEBRASKA

was founded in 1893 when seven men met to consider an organized fellowship. In March of 1895, seventy persons were accepted as charter members.

A pastor from Oakland, Nebraska began visiting Wausa in the 1890s preaching in homes and schoolhouses. A Swedish-English Sunday School was organized in 1891 and these classes became the foundation of the Mission Church.

The first permanent pastor came in 1893. The first name chosen was “Swedish Christian Congregation of Wausa.”

The first meetings were held in the Wausa Public School. The church’s first building was completed in 1898 and the $2,500.00 cost had been fully paid.

The Swedish language was used in all Sunday School classes until about 1918. By the early 1930s English was used in all the services of the church.

The church building, built originally in 1898 has been extensively remodelled several times over the years, most recently for the centennial celebration in 1993. A total of twenty full-time pastors have served the church in its 108 years of ministry in Wausa.

From that humble beginning, the church has prospered over the years proclaiming the Good News of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We are members of The Evangelical Covenant Church denomination with headquarters in Chicago, Illinois, and its Midwest Conference with offices in Omaha, Nebraska.

The Lord’s Supper is observed the first Sunday of each month.
